The traps in leadership: The power of position compared to the essence of leadership

Leadership comes from inside, not from the outside. This is something we often tend to forget and to play with. The formal power carries a threat of masking the actual image of ourselves. People are often saying less to someone on the high position that what they really think. If a leader is missing to see that, he is looking at himself in a cloudy mirror. On the other hand, if he/she is aware of it, he/she will build on it trustful and open relations with people around, both internally and externally, as this is the only way he/she can expect a real feedback and advice.

The essence of leadership lies in the fact that no matter the type of situation we are in, we will preserve, prior to all other, the humane aspect in ourselves and to approach the people around us in equal manner, irrespective of the position they are holding. Whatever the managerial competencies we are skilled, this is not sufficient for us being the leaders, as people follow people, and that is where the essence of leadership lies.
