How do we get to managerial positions?
It happens in companies that people are placed on managerial positions without previous preparation. Business drives us to these situations. In case of open positions it has been an eternal dilemma in business whether to bring “an outside player” or to internally promote someone with a leadership potential.
Usually, the dilemma is resolved through bringing “an outside player”, who after couple of months proves not to be such a good solution, so we go back to the internal one. And what do we get in the end – our employee who eventually gets promoted, yet who feels as if “eating from a dirty plate”, taken that someone else was a better choice in the beginning, and company realizing finally that I am not that bad, right?
It also happens often as a result of such situation that we promote an internal employee who proves not to be the right one on the managerial position. And what do we get as the final result – an employee who then seeks his opportunities in some other company, as not willing to go back to his old lower position despite the fact that he did not perform well in the new one. Furthermore, we do not like the scenario either in most of the cases.
Such dilemmas, and similar ones, are part of leadership practice, part of the road we are taking, which requires serious emotional stability, the ability to bring decisions and courage to stick to them. Moreover, it requires that we accept ourselves the way we are and to strongly decide that every situation in business and in life is a new lecture, preparing us for a new part of the leadership journey.
